What Truly Matters: Lessons from Hurricane Helene

Hi Reader,

I hope this email finds you all safe and well. In my beautiful state of North Carolina, this past week has been filled with news of devastation and destruction from Hurricane Helene. So many images of homes, nature, roads just that were gone in an instant.

Having spent the majority of my life here (especially my college years at Appalachian State University in Boone) I’ve always cherished the mountains and the serenity they bring.

Seeing these majestic places and the wonderful, kind-hearted people who call them home affected by such devastation is truly heart-breaking.

In tough times like these, it’s important to remember how much our community and support matter. I encourage you to think about donating to relief efforts through groups like the Salvation Army and Samaritan’s Purse. Every little bit helps, and together, we can make a real difference for those in need.

As we see the people who have lost everything, it reminds us of what really matters in our lives. Our health, our loved ones, and our safety are what we care about most. If you’ve been touched by this event—whether through friends and family or the sad stories on the news—take a moment to think:

What if everything you have was swept away?

What items would I truly miss?

I think most of us would agree that as long as our family, friends, and pets are safe, the vast majority of what we have in our homes could be replaced.

As you continue on your declutting journey, I challenge you to use this as a gauge for items you are holding on to. Is it an item you would truly miss if it were swept away?

If not, then...

Everything else is just stuff.

Stuff is the things that fill our closets, our attics, our cabinets, but these items do not serve any purpose, make our lives easier or bring us joy.

As you continue on your organizing journey, I challenge you to let this newfound clarity guide your decisions on what to keep and what is just STUFF. Then let the stuff go and enjoy your home filled only with items that you would miss if they were gone in an instant.

I love this picture taken of Chimney Rock. Even with the destroyed road, someone persevered to climb up the mountain to make sure the American Flag was hung.

May you have the same drive and determination to meet your goals.

Wishing you peace and clarity,

Sandy

P.S. I’d love to hear about your decluttering successes! Feel free to reply to this email and share your stories. Your journey can inspire others to take that first step! 🌟

When I had to take time to rest and focus on my recovery, I realized how much my organized home systems helped me. With everything in its place, I...

Home decorated for Halloween

Hi Reader, I hope you’re doing well! In my neighborhood, we’re already seeing Halloween decorations popping up everywhere! 🎃 It’s such a fun time of year, but it also means the holiday season is just around the corner. I don’t know about you, but every time I pull out those spooky decorations, I find myself wandering into the attic or storage areas, thinking, “Wow, I really need to clean this place out!” Sound familiar? Let’s be honest—life gets busy, and it’s easy to let clutter pile up. But...
